Tensions Simmer as Cambodia Accuses Thai Military of Ceasefire Violations

Phnom Penh, Cambodia - Despite a ceasefire agreement effective July 28, 2025, aimed at de-escalating the recent border conflict, the Cambodian government has accused the Thai military of engaging in a series of provocative and invasive actions that undermine the fragile peace. Cambodian officials have detailed numerous incidents, which they contend are clear violations of the ceasefire and a threat to regional stability.

According to statements from Cambodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Thai soldiers have repeatedly encroached upon Cambodian territory in the days and weeks following the ceasefire. These alleged actions include the moving of barricades and the laying of barbed wire in disputed areas, the digging of new military trenches, and the establishment of new outposts.

One of the most serious allegations leveled by Cambodia is the capture of Cambodian soldiers by the Thai military after the ceasefire was in effect. Cambodian authorities have condemned this as a blatant violation of the terms of the agreement and have called for the immediate and unconditional release of their personnel.

Furthermore, Cambodia has reported instances of Thai military patrols crossing into Cambodian territory, creating a climate of fear and intimidation among local populations. These incursions, often accompanied by what Cambodia describes as a "disinformation campaign" from the Thai side, are seen as a deliberate attempt to alter the status quo on the ground.

In response to these developments, an observer team from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has been dispatched to inspect the border situation. The Cambodian government has presented the observer team with evidence of the alleged Thai provocations and has urged the international community to hold Thailand accountable for its actions.

While Thailand has denied the allegations and has made counter-accusations of Cambodian ceasefire violations, the continued tensions highlight the deep-seated mistrust and the unresolved issues that plague the border region. International observers have expressed concern over the potential for a renewal of armed conflict and have called on both sides to exercise maximum restraint and engage in sincere dialogue to resolve their differences peacefully.

The international community, including the United Nations, is closely monitoring the situation, urging both nations to adhere to the ceasefire agreement and to work towards a lasting and peaceful resolution to the border dispute. The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether the ceasefire will hold or if the region will once again be plunged into conflict.
